XXX Wasteland Exclusive Interview: Stoya

with 10 comments

Digital Playground contract talent Stoya kindly granted XXX Wasteland a recent interview to discuss her beginnings in the adult industry, her views on alternative porn as opposed to traditional XXX films, and more.

You can check out Stoya in Digital Playground’s recently released Bad Girls 5. She can also be reached via Twitter and Tumblr.

(Special thanks to Guyleen Castriotta of Digital Playground for arranging the interview)

Let’s start at the beginning: How did you initially become interested – and later involved – in the adult industry?

When I was eighteen or so and living in Philadelphia, I had this roommate who was a photographer. He’d been published in a couple of places but was mostly treating photography as a hobby – and to my knowledge, he still is. Godsgirls.com and Razordolls.com both contacted him to talk about commissioning sets for their websites, and he needed a girl to photograph. I was already go go dancing for some of the nightclubs and fetish parties, and was very much more interested in being photographed with my clothes off than with my clothes on. We did a test shoot, I loved it, it was lots of fun, and next thing you know I was packing up to go to LA and work with people like Christine Kessler, Lithium Picnic, and Octavio/Winkytiki. As far as the transition from nudie pinup photos to full on hardcore video:

First there was Razordolls. Jack The Zipper had signed on to direct a DVD for them, and really wanted me in his film. I hadn’t seen porn at this point, so I went over to TLA video’s back room and rented the first thing that caught my eye (The Fashionistas) and Jack The Zipper’s first movie (Stuntgirl). My roommates and I curled up on the couch together and watched both movies. They were interesting, but I wasn’t sure if I’d physically be capable of all of the extreme acts. On the other hand, Jack and the owner of Razordolls seemed very nice. We discussed the probability that all they’d get was a few minutes of me rolling around in lingerie with another girl, and I got on the plane to LA. The work I did for Razordolls was interesting, and parts were very fun, but there wasn’t much sexual heat between the other performer and I, so I decided to stick to the softcore and fetish stuff that I was really enjoying.

A couple of years later, Digital Playground contacted me and asked me to come into their office to discuss a scene with Sophia Santi. You should Google her really quick. Isn’t she gorgeous? They picked the best bait ever. Once I was in their office, Robby D. asked me about shooting with boys. Everyone at the office seemed so professional, and Robby was so entertaining, so I went home and seriously thought about the potential repercussions of entering hardcore adult entertainment. A week or so later, I called Digital Playground back and told them I was into it, and they said, “Sign here.”

As you mentioned, you were signed as an exclusive performer for Digital Playground in 2007 and are considered the first alt porn contract girl. What are your feelings in regard to the alternative side of the industry as opposed to more traditional adult films (Advantages and disadvantages, fans of both genres, public perception, etc.) and do you prefer to work in one over the other?

Are there any other ‘alt’ contract girls yet?

I do see a higher value placed on the importance of detailed aesthetic in alt and fetish, but seeing that same attention to detail and production value done at Digital Playground with the bigger budgets that go along with a larger consumer base was one of the reasons that they immediately impressed me. I don’t really know about a difference in fans of both genres because most of my ‘fanbase’ from the alt nude/fetish work I had done followed me to my hardcore work and it seems like new ‘fans’ were probably attracted by the same qualities and just happened to notice me from porn. I do think I have some of the most awesome ‘fans’ ever though … they’re usually into sci-fi and obscure art stuff, which means they usually don’t look at me weird when I reference Terry Pratchett or when my phone goes off and the ringtone is the Daleks from Doctor Who.

You maintain an active presence online via Twitter, MySpace, a personal XCritic blog, and other forums. How important do you think the Internet is – or can be – to an adult performer’s career in 2010?

I’ve heard my online presence brought up numerous times as a contributing factor in the success of my career. As a kid who grew up with the internet (who remembers CompuServ and Prodigy? I do) and was socially awkward, I developed a real appreciation for the ability to interact with people in an environment where I could take the time to read something they were saying more than once if I wasn’t understanding it and think about how what I was saying was going to be taken and revise it if necessary. Now various social networking platforms are the only way I’m able to keep up with all of my friends who travel frequently or live more than a couple of hours away. If other people want to follow my Twitter or Tumblr, they’re more than welcome, especially when they turn out to be pretty nifty people.

Let’s learn a little bit about Stoya, the person. Where did you grow up?

North Carolina, Delaware, and Philadelphia … mostly.

What are some of your interests and hobbies?

After work (scenes, still photo shoots for spank rags and art magazines, and all the time I put in doing interviews), Aerial Acrobatics training, Improv courses, and pattern drafting/fabric sourcing/sewing are done, the only hobbies I have are reading and laying on my face for five minutes before I fall asleep. I might have time for hobbies when I’m 90.

Are there any upcoming Stoya-related projects that you would like to make known to readers?

Bad Girls 5 just released, I’ll be at the Digital Playground and Fleshlight booths at AEE in January, and I have a Fleshlight made from each of my traditionally penetrable orifices. From what I hear, people with penises find Fleshlights enjoyable.

In closing, is there anything you would like to say to your fans?

Yes. If there’s anything I want to say to them, I’ll say it on Twitter or Tumblr. : ) Alternately, they are welcome to say things to me since I do try to respond whenever I have a scrap of free time.
