First off, I’d like to congratulate you on your illustrious year thus far in 2012. Not only did you collect a host of Adult Video News Awards this past January, but you were also named Performer of the Year for XBIZ, the Adult Entertainment Broadcast Network and the X-Rated Critics Organization. That is an incredible number of honors in one year. How does it feel to be so celebrated by the industry in which you make your living?

I feel incredibly honored. It’s an awesome feeling to be considered one of the best at anything, really. I think it’s great to have (literally) worked my ass off all year and be recognized for it!

Let’s backtrack a little bit: Can you tell us how you initially became interested – and later involved – in the adult industry?

I’ve always wanted to be in porn – since I was way too young to say. The adult business has always been held in this glamorous light in my mind. I started out as a dominatrix at 19, moved on to stripping, did a year on a radio show and there I met Gina Lynn, who eased me into porn. I’m so grateful to both her and her husband. It was a great way to enter this business.

What do you enjoy most about being an adult film starlet?

This always changes. When I first started, my favorite thing was just the act of having sex in front of the camera. Nowadays, while the idea of having sex in front of an audience still excites me, I really enjoy the variety of people I get to have sex with.

Who are some of your favorite studios and performers to work with?

As far as girls go, I really love London Keyes, Katsuni, Dana Vespoli, Celeste Star and Jayden Cole. The European boys are the best male performers to me. They have a pervertedness about them that turns me on so much. Toni Ribas is my favorite.

My favorite studio is Elegant Angel. I do my best scenes for them.

You were a regular on the Bubba the Love Sponge radio program earlier in your career. Can you tell us about that?

They were looking for a girl to promote the strip club I was dancing at, and, being a fan of the show, I volunteered. They liked me, moved me down to Florida, and I stayed there for a year.

Did you enjoy your stint on the Bubba show?

Absolutely. Everyone was so cool and I had a blast. It was a lot of fun, and in hindsight, I did a lot of crazy shit I probably wouldn’t have the guts to do again.

Taking into account all of your accolades, are there any goals you still wish to accomplish in your career?

I’d like to have sex with a she-male.

Is there one misconception about the adult industry that you wish you could dispel?

I don’t know that there are many straight-up “misconceptions.” I mean, for every preconception there is of porn stars, there are thousands of girls to prove it right. I guess I’d like people to know I’m not on drugs and I do porn because I want to – because I love to. I think that this is probably true of a lot of the successful girls.

I understand you lived in Japan for part of your childhood before relocating to the United States in your early teens. Being very young, but still old enough to understand the concept of such a big move, was transferring to America a huge culture shock?

Oh, definitely. I moved back to NewYork City when I was 13 – an age where “fitting in” is the most important thing in one’s life. Everything about New York kids was different compared to the kids in Japan: pop culture, hobbies, clothes … New York kids are bad! Ha, ha!

Let’s learn a little bit more about Asa Akira, the person: How would you describe yourself growing up?

I was really shy. My mom used to tell me constantly, “Shy people never get anything.” I guess she was right!

What are some of your interests and hobbies away from work?

I’m a homebody. I like movies, I like hanging out with my dog. I’m very simple.

Is there one thing about yourself that you feel would surprise most people?

I don’t drink. I’ve only been drunk maybe 4 or 5 times in my life.

Are there any upcoming or current projects in the works that you would like to mention?

Always! I just shot Asa Loves Girls for Mile High Movies. Also, please check out my Fleshlight that came out a few months ago.

In closing, is there anything you wish to say to readers?

Thanks for watching!
